We've been having fun creating giant apples, pears and bumble bees! Working with 3D illustration supremo Andy Shillito, we've just completed this image for National Friendly's Annual Report and Accounts.

We're pleased to be working with Tensar and lately we've been producing the first campaign work for them based around the proposition "Tensar Is the Answer."

The campaign focuses on how their specialist technical team can offer support, certified design and initial installation advice to specific project needs, rather than just a set formula. Cost-effective, timesaving and lasting ground stabilisation solutions can then be implemented. Quite literally, Tensar Is the Answer.

We're chuffed our Further Education prospectus for Mid Cheshire College has been shortlisted in the Heist Awards. This year the internationally renowned awards are celebrating their 20th anniversary, with the awards ceremony taking place at the Palace Hotel, Manchester on Thursday 27th May.

Fingers crossed!

A fine artist who happened to work in advertising is one of the simpler ways to sum up Michel Huet. Even in his schooldays at Ryder Brow in Gorton (Myra Hindley was a fellow pupil) he held art exhibitions in his back yard, and on one famous occasion, while his parents were away, he painted a replica of the Sistine Chapel on their bedroom ceiling.

LS Lowry praised his work at Salford College of Art, and throughout his working life Mich sketches and scamps had a delicate beauty all of their own. They were his true medium, even more than the award-winning ads they often became. He often whiled away dull meetings by creating brilliant impromptu portraits of those around the table.

Clothes were another passion. He was, after all, the son of an emigre tailor who came to Manchester from Belgium just after the war. On any given day at work he might turn up in a suit and tie, one of his famous spectacular shirts or ripped jeans decorated with the perfect symbol of his mischievous nature, Bart Simpson.

His CV suggests that he worked at a lot of agencies in a forty-year career, starting at Gee Advertising, The Buchanan Company, Huet Timmins, Huet & Co and latterly Huet Aminto. The truth is that they were all simply Huet, regardless of name or ownership.

Nobody who met Mich him ever forgot him. It was impossible to walk with him around Manchester without bumping into an acquaintance, and he rarely entered a restaurant without being greeted as an old friend by a waiter or maitre d.

Pitching and presenting to clients with him was exhilarating. Account handlers (always referred to as ‘the grownups’) soon learned that if they told him expressly not to say something in the meeting, he would make a point of saying it. Telling him not to present a particularly outrageous layout was equally futile. Even more gallingly, he always got away with it.

In fact clients loved him, delighted to be associated with all that creativity and passion. And Mich’s attitude to clients was that they were his personal possessions. Losing an account was an affront that simply had to be put right and his persistence was superhuman. A certain clothing company was still receiving regular phone calls from him at least twenty years after he had last done a job for them.

That’s what makes me think that, if there’s a Heaven, Mich will be in it. Because otherwise, the great grownup in the sky will be getting an almighty earbashing for the rest of eternity.

Hannah and I would like to thank most sincerely everyone who has sent cards, emails, texts, flowers and love to us since Mich died. We have found great comfort in your words, we have laughed at your many Mich stories and we share your grief.

Mich was passionate about his work, it simply was his life, an artist and adman through and through! He especially loved the people with whom he worked throughout his long and industrious career and particularly those he trained and encouraged. He could spot a budding star better than anyone I've ever known, and there are many hundreds of you that he inspired along the way.

I thank you all, because you made it all worthwhile for him. You made work fun and we all know that FUN WORKS! So keep it up and remember if you are having a grey day just wear an outstandingly bright shirt and the world will seem a better place.

Cheers to you all and cheers Mich, we love and miss you.

Mich's passing will leave a huge void for everyone who knew him – "his idiosyncrasies made him unforgettable and his generosity and encouragement to students and young creatives is an example to all."

The funeral is next Wednesday at 12 noon at St Mark’s Church, Dunham Massey. It will be a celebration of Mich’s life and very definitely NOT a black affair. The request is that the family don’t really want to see any black at all. Lets make it colourful!! Everyone is welcome and there will be a bash afterwards.

HuetAminto’s chosen charity for Christmas 2009 is the NSPCC’s FULL STOP campaign, which aims to end cruelty to children by raising awareness and changing attitudes.

As part of our fund raising efforts we’re sending out e-cards rather than going to the expense of buying a posting traditional Christmas cards and presents.

The Christmas Markets in Manchester attract thousands of people every year and it was a matter of time before the girls started looking for a german sausage to devour, a drink to drink and some random people along the way.

The cake reflects the theme of our current advertising campaign, which features illustrations of irresistible cakes and buns, which in turn reflect National Friendly's tasty products that enable brokers and their customers to have their cake and eat it. It was the icing on the cake of a great year for National Friendly and we look forward to helping them celebrate even more success in the future.

I've had many different soups in my lunch times, 20 years in the industry, seen hundreds of combinations, becoming a symbol of wealth, yes! Gordon Ramsey and Marco Pierre White have dabbled in the stuff, even the future King has a range, I've even spent more than £6 pounds on the stuff. Chicken soup you argue, Vegetable, or even the retro classic minestrone is a heavyweight contender but it's got to be a classic Heinz tomato soup that wins time and time again.

There comes a time when your clients feel the urge to throw themselves off a very tall building. Chris Meier was one of four vertigo-defying volunteers from client National Friendly who recently abseiled down one of Bristol’s highest buildings in the aid of charity. Over £2000 was raised for Above & Beyond’s CaRE Appeal (Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy Environment), which will go towards the 1.6 million transformation of the Bristol Haematology and Oncology Unit. If anyone finds Chris’s stomach will they please return it to him as soon as possible.

If you’ve ever wondered what a kinetic ambient reflection membrane
is and what it does, we’re about to show you. And if you already know, then you’re way ahead of the game. Check out this video and you’ll see
the Flare façade acts as a building’s skin, and computer generation controls movement of a number of metal flake components. 

The system is modular and each flake can be programmed to tilt toward or away from the sun – reflecting light off it’s surface and creating movement in infinite patterns across the surface of a building thereby allowing the façade to interact with its surroundings. We wonder if this could be the beginning of a new direction for photovoltaic panels?

"I like to have a toe in every pie"... Perhaps it is down to the fact that our Client Services Director's mind works too quickly, but Jenny does have the habit of occasionally mixing up the odd phrase. Today's was "I like to have a toe in every pie". Which follows on from last week's "he was up sh*t creek without a ladder". We're all looking forward to "don't judge a book before it's hatched", and "It was the stitch in time that broke the camel's back". We'll keep you posted.

We have just completed work on a book to promote Corus' stainless reputation in the educational building sector. For those in the know, Kalzip systems from Corus are the Rolls Royce of metal architecture.
The benefits of the sytem have made them an ideal choice for many new educational buildings. Corus asked us to produce a book to reflect this. 

As it is to be sent to notoriously hard to impress architects and specifiers, the book had to be a flawless showcase of cutting edge architecture. The design solution treads a careful line between considered, clean graphics and a slighty educational feel. 
It is spiral, then perfect bound (yes, you can do that), and then printed in 7 colours. It will then arrive in its very own 'pencil case' cover. 

Martin, the designer says: "We wanted to create a grown-up school book; reflecting the sector, but obviously not being childish.
It was hard work, but I'm chuffed with the result."

Hewlett-Packard launches a new website featuring Paula Scher,
Jake Burton and Gwen Stefani as part of its $300 million 
Print 2.0 campaign designed to inspire and empower customers with free customizable, printable content. For her part, Scher designed five business templates, including letterhead, envelopes, business cards and notecards, that provide users with a complete graphics package.
Named Bold, Modern, Edgy, Elegant and Friendly, the templates were designed to appeal to a diverse array of businesses and personality types. Two templates, Friendly and Modern, are available for download today, with the others being added over the next few weeks.

The site also features an interview with Scher in which she speaks
about how to build a successful brand identity. “The characteristic that matters for every good brand is that you look like you made your decisions based on who you are for specific reasons, not that they were accidental,” she says. “A small business should ask itself who its customer is, who are they talking to. They should think about how to present themselves and what their tone of voice should be.” Shot in Pentagram’s New York office, the interview is accompanied by commentary about some of her most celebrated designs.

“No template is a substitute for hiring a professional designer,” warns Scher, and indeed at Scher’s suggestion the HP site includes a prominent link to the AIGA designer directory. “But at the very least, I hope we can stop a few innocent people out there from using Comic Sans.”

Rounding out the site’s content, Jake Burton offers advice on how to produce a successful marketing campaign and the importance of a strong visual brand, while Gwen Stefani offers customizable 

Harajuku-inspired paper dolls, party invites and CD covers.

We are saddened to hear of the passing of former D&AD President's Award winner, Paul Arden.

D&AD Chairman, Anthony Simmonds-Gooding: "Paul Arden was one
of the most exceptional creative directors I’ve known, with an individualism and passion for perfection that resulted in some of the best advertising of the 80s and 90s.

He was awarded numerous Yellow Pencils throughout his career,
and a Black Pencil in 1991 while still at Saatchi & Saatchi. Graham Fink presented him with the President’s Award in 1996 for a contribution to creativity that really can be considered outstanding.

Paul’s passing will leave a hole in British advertising –
his idiosyncrasies made him unforgettable and his generosity and encouragement to students and young creatives is an example to all."

The timing is perfect with boat fuel prices soaring. Our client Ashurst Industries recently asked us to brand and promote their cunning new invention: a simple yet highly effective locking device for boat fuel tanks. The timing is perfect with boat fuel prices soaring due to tax
and duty changes. Suddenly fuel theft from boats is a very real danger,
and fuel security is now a high priority for boat owners, who also know that their fuel is rarely covered by insurance. We needed to move quickly,
and we did. Our suggested brand name Fuelock was swiftly approved, the logo design followed, production is now in full swing, and the first burst of advertising is sailing into all the right publications.

“I’ve not been very well” has always been a bit of a catch phrase
with our joint Creative Director Michel Huét, but he was genuinely rather poorly recently. The good news is that Michel has made an excellent recovery and is now back at his desk full time, more brightly shirted and shod than ever. To prove his return to fitness he recently
had a run-in with some burly Mancunian bin men outside the office. We’re not sure who won the argument, but the rubbish
disappeared somewhere…

Bristol-based friendly society National Deposit has asked us to conduct
a root and branch rebranding exercise, which may even result in a change of name. National Deposit is a mutual organisation that traces its roots back to 1868, and played in a key role in the establishment of Britain’s National Health Service in 1948. It is unusual in offering
both financial and healthcare products to its members. We are now actively engaged in creating several branding options, working closely with specialist market research company Quaestor Financial, so that we can eventually arrive at the new branding that will enable National Deposit to launch a major membership recruitment drive.

Pride of place goes to the initial letter B. We have recently completed
a comprehensive rebranding exercise for our long-standing client Beamish, the amazingly popular outdoor museum in County Durham. After a long, painstaking process, the new look is now fully approved. At its heart is a unique, specially created font (named Beamish of course). Pride of place goes to the initial letter B, which becomes a distinctive and instantly recognisable ‘window’ through which 
images of the attraction and its people appear.

On September 1st 2007 Huet and Company and Aminto Brands merged to create a new company. The name Huet Aminto was chosen after much deliberation and debate - partly because it was the simplest solution. Directors of the new company are Anne Campbell and Mark Halliwell, from Aminto, Jenny Norton and Michel Huet from… You’ve probably guessed where they’re from. Since the merger the former Huet offices at
5 Ridgefield have undergone a gradual transformation involving lots of new technology and even larger quantities of white paint.
